Der Film dreht sich um das Leben der neunjährigen Liesel Meminger, die kurz vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg in Deutschland wohnt. Nachdem ihr Bruder bei einem Zugunglück ums Leben kommt, versucht ihre Mutter Liesel in Sicherheit zu bringen, da sie selbst als Kommunistin von den Nazis verfolgt wird. Sie kommt daraufhin bei der einfachen Arbeiterfamilie Hubermann in Molching bei München unter. Diese Familie, die unter der Haustreppe auch einen jüdischen Flüchtling vor den Nazis bei sich versteckt, soll von nun an ihre Pflegefamilie sein. Ihre neue Pflegemutter Rosa ist streng und lässt Liesel hart im Haushalt arbeiten. Ihr Pflegevater Hans kümmert sich jedoch fürsorglich um das traumatisierte Mädchen, das Nacht für Nacht von ihren Erinnerungen geplagt wird und nicht einschlafen kann. Er nutzt ihre wachen Stunden und bringt ihr das Lesen bei. Von ihrer Vergangenheit verfolgt, flüchtet sie sich in die Phantasiewelten gestohlener Bücher.
